Price is not the only way of choosing which airline to choose - but it’s a good place to start! But be careful, many airlines from the Biggest (BA?) to the smallest have ways of hiding add-on costs which will eat into your budget. Always check on the in-flight food situation before choosing an airline, if you can’t survive three hours in a tin can without a cup of coffee then add at least £5.00 to the cost of any airline journey on any airline which confesses to be a "low-cost" airline. Check out what type of aircraft the airline is operating and how modern are they ? Airbuses are wider than Boeings so appear more spacious and don’t be afraid of flying on airline with non-jet aircraft (turbo-props in airline speak) often they are more comfortable and quieter than a high density Jet. Make sure the airline is trading profitably and if you’re not sure then take out Scheduled Service Airline Failure insurance to cover the risk - for £5.00 per person. Finally if you’re picky about the attitude of the in-flight attendants, choose your airline by National stereotypes: yes the Brits are reserved and stuffy; yes, the aussies are over familiar: yes the Americans do it well but with little sincerity; yes the far east carriers do it graciously and no, don’t expect the Russians to give a hoot how they do it…..

Airline Alliances - love them or hate them, airline alliances are here to stay. The good news is that they can make your airline journey easier. They do this by joining up connecting flights on different airlines and making the process of baggage transfer more predictable for the airlines. The Bad news is that they can also force passengers to use less convenient connections with longer waits in dreary transfer halls, Plus they don’t always deliver the same in-flight standards on all airlines throughout the journey. This latter point is not a problem if you’ve paid the lowest possible airline fare on all sectors but airline alliances tend to have a premium for at least part of a connected itinerary on different airlines. In our eyes airline alliances are restricting choice rather than enhancing standards. We urge you to check out every possible airline for each leg of a journey rather than just accepting the most easily booked itinerary on one airline alliance, you’ll be surprised at the savings and hopefully enjoy the different airlines encountered along the way.
