We are getting reports of aircraft being grounded and passengers being delayed as the Low Cost, long haul Carrier Zoom runs into financial difficulties. Whilst this is a sign of the troubled economic times that currently prevail in the airline industry we are hoping that this innovative, plucky little carrier will keep flying. It has revolutionised long haul transatlantic air travel from the UK and is run by an expert management team plus Zoom is owned by two of the UK’s best travel entrepreneurs. In normal times this would be more than sufficient to see an airline not only survive but thrive,,we’re routing for Zoom and hope that it is not about join the number of independent airlines which have already disappeared during 2008. Come on guys pull back on the stick and find the lift you need to make it back into the sky !!!!

Last week we invited several thousand customers and users of our site to give us some feedback on our new look, and suggestions for improvements. We got loads of replies - and I am still responding individually to each one (as promised). Thanks to everyone who responded for your interest and ideas!
Overall the site design seems to have gone down quite well - and we have lots of great new ideas to work on in the coming months. Priority feature will be Multi-stop itineraries which lots of you are requesting (and which we are currently testing). We are also working on a "best price" calendar function to highlight bargain dates. Next up must be multi-currency!
We have already attempted to address the speed issues - with a new hosting platform. We have also now implemented "authenticated" online payments for Visa and Mastercard users - which will greatly reduce the need to ask for "offline" payment authentication (something that none of us like!)
We got far too many comments to publish in full, but here are some random extracts of the good, the bad and the ugly, to give you the flavour:-
"I personally find the use of soft colours (as you have done with the website) really helpful. Strong or harsh colours can make it quite difficult for me to view, so thanks for avoiding this. I was wondering, however, how easy it would be for someone with a visual impairment to view some of the text (eg: white text on light blue background, or light grey on light blue)." PW
"can you please redo it allowing the search without the dates or at least the dates within say a 4 month window. Also better if can put departure just as Uk so can see which airports offer flights." CL
"I don’t care to see all the credit card images you accept so prominently." TF
"Looks and works fine. The only way to book these smaller airlines - Thanks" HC
"Multi stops would be handy (ie I want to fly melbourne to singapore (stay one month) then KL to Gold Coast (stay 2 days) then Gold Coast to melbourne - I have to search each leg individually which is a drag" DP
"It would be good if there was the option ’FLEXIBLE DATES’ in order to find more quickly the cheapest flights (perhap...

Success is built though small achievements which together make a business grow. Yesterday’s important small step was to get the mighty Google to pick up the Alternative Airlines news story that we publish each day. Whilst this may not bring many extra bookings. as part of our ongoing campaign to make the world aware of all the little airlines which offer a great service and great value, this is a major triumph.

Just a quick note to celebrate the return Of LAB LLoyd Aero Bolivia to the skies over Bolivia. Apart form being one of the world’s oldest airlines, (82 this year) it is one of our favourite - mainly because of the lovely people who have managed to keep it going despite all sorts of problems over the last few years. We wish them every success in the future and promise them our full support !

Following the success of helping Iran Air make their flights to Tehran bookabe on-line, we are now co-operating with Air Europa to get their Gatwick to Havana service more available for on-line booking. One of the great things about being an independent UK company is that we don’t have to abide by any US imposed sanctions on trade with Cuba, like some of our competitors, in fact one of the great things about being an independent UK company is that we can make our own mind up about trading with just about any airline in the world - including carriers from Myanmar, North Korea and other politically sensitive countries. Our current view is that access to air travel is likely to enhance the possibility of a political change for the better and also gives individuals the chance to personally see and judge a nation for themselves, rather than rely on media reporting. Cuba is an easy choice to feature, its a wonderful, warm country with high ideals and fun, friendly people, with others countries the decision is more difficult.
